A sign touting the candidacy of Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Roy Moore outside of the Shelby County, AL Republican Party headquarters was defaced Friday. The sign was marked through in several places and the words “Doug Jones,” Moore’s Democratic Party opponent in Tuesday’s U.S. Senate special election, were written in numerous places on the sign. The headquarters in Pelham, AL, a southern suburb of Birmingham, is located on Valleydale Road near U.S. Hwy 31 and is a prominent thoroughfare that serves Pelham and Helena. The Shelby County group declared in a Facebook post that it “refuse to be deterred or intimidated by the frustrated supporters of a losing Democrat candidate.” It went on to add that vandalism “was never acceptable.”   Follow Jeff Poor on Twitter @jeff_poor

Sunday, CNN political analyst Carl Bernstein said the anti-FBI special counsel Robert Mueller rhetoric coming from Fox News hosts like Sean Hannity and Jeanine Pirro, as well as other conservatives, was “abetting a cover-up” with the White House. “[I]t abets a cover-up because there is a cover-up going on in the White House and among Trump’s aides and former aides relating to these investigations,” Bernstein told host Brian Stelter. “We do not know specifically what the cover-up is about, whether it constitutes an obstruction of justice or a criminal conspiracy at this point, though.” “But yes, because the commentators that you are hearing and showing there are not open in any way to the best obtainable version of the truth, to facts, to context, who seem to be oblivious to the serial lying of the president of the United States and members of his family and those on his staff and those in the Trump organization, yes, they are abetting a cover-up,” he added. Bernstein said there was “an attempt” by Republicans in Washington DC to defend Trump “at any cost, including the cost of the truth.” Follow Trent Baker on Twitter @MagnifiTrent

In a Sunday appearance on New York AM 970 radio’s “The Cats Roundtable,” Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) responded to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) describing the GOP tax bill as “Armageddon” this week. Barrasso dismissed Pelosi’s comments, calling her “almost unhinged.” “Nancy Pelosi has said [the tax bill] is the end of the world and this is Armageddon. The statements are almost unhinged,” Barrasso told host John Catsimatidis. “People like Nancy Pelosi run for office so they can basically try to grow the government. And people like me run for office to put policies in place to grow the economy. For her it may sound like Armageddon, but for me it sounds like freedom.” Follow Trent Baker on Twitter @MagnifiTrent

Sunday on CNN’s “Reliable Sources,” a panel, featuring columnist Kyle Whitmire, Huntsville, AL radio talk host Dale Jackson and The Washingtonian’s Elaina Plott, analyzed the role of the media in week’s U.S. Senate special election in Alabama. Stelter wondered why some Alabamians are still supporting Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Roy Moore, despite allegations against that he acted inappropriately toward underage females decades ago. Whitmire argued media queries often reinforced why Moore’s base supported him. Jackson responded by pointing out how Moore and President Donald Trump have had success weaponizing the term “fake news,” and argued that the media had itself to blame. Jackson pointed to a 2015 column from Whitmire in which a poll question was included about Moore’s sexuality, and suggested it was media attacks like that as to why many Alabama voters don’t trust the media.
